Heading towards Stroud, had a sign saying M4W. After 10 minutes got a lift to Cirencester. I stand next to the road by the picnic benches and the lorry park.―Wienerpolser

Good spot, though at 7AM on a Monday it didn't seem like much traffic was going far on the M25. Had a sign for Cobham/M4. Two cars stopped and offered short lifts, then after an hour one took me to Cobham services.―Wienerpolser

Kept asking people if they were going to London, some people going the other direction or Manchester. Could not find a ride. Tried going out of the city but also could not get a ride there.―Anonymous

This is my "waiting" time not including sleeping. I got there at around 11pm, sketchy time to arrive [no lorries/trucks will be stopping anyway in this area - I would say at least 100km away, maybe more due to the situation..].This makes it a bit tricky for people to trust you. When I was there, there was a small camp of paperless folk (you really understand your privileges being in this area).
If you stop here, you absolutely need to talk to people. While a lot of people can be damn rude, you should find someone eventually. I got a camper van (what?! They almost never stop...we'll...this was rented) going across to UK at Dunkerque...I explained them the process of needing to add me to their ticket, but we got to the office and they said that it was already fine. Does it depend on the company? This was DFDS.
Got a little nervous at passport control when they asked how we knew each other - you should do a better job than me - they're not the biggest fan of hitchers...but it would be ridiculous to go past ticket control and be kicked out there.
Careful not to get out at Dover - it sucks. Get out if you need to on the first services on the motorway, or M25 services :-)

Waited 10 seconds with a sign saying M4 E, 3rd car that passed took me to Swindon.―Wienerpolser

Waited about an hour, mostly outside the shop with a sign saying Calais>UK, and asking the few cars I saw with UK plates. Eventually an Irish guy offered me a lift, took me in the ferry and dropped me outside London.―Wienerpolser

A blind corner as cars are speeding up for the motorway. There is space to stop. Maybe try along London Road but there’s not many good spots to stop around the roundabout―Breno

traffic is not crazy, but this is still my pick of choice to get to england from france. i've had varying luck ranging from rides in 2h to, this time, getting there at 18:30 and only getting a lift at 10:00, with only 4h spent sleeping. i strongly recommend asking around, maybe with a sign.not huge amounts of traffic but very solid proportion of UK cars (seasonally dependent). i've found that many english cars can be downright mean and are often full, but don't get discouraged! there are also some nice ones worth waiting for.
easy enough to give up and go to calais if you're in a rush.
indoor bits close at 22:00 but i believe the one opposite stays open.
someone called the cops and staff lady vouched for me so they apologised and left me alone

Stood at the entrance to the petrol station and got a lift heading into London. Also got offered a lift to Milton Keynes inside the services when seen walking around with sign. Not loads of traffic but decent spot―ActingOutColours

Bonega veturo kun Majstro Edd, li eĉ donis al mi 20 britajn pundojn. Dankon. I arrived in the evening at 23:00.Because foot passengers are not allowed on the ferry during the night, I asked drivers in the parking lot if they can take me with them onto the ferry.
The good things is that you pay per car and not per passengers in the car, so I didnt have to pay for the ferry at all.

superb hitching point (service area) for bristol, birmingham etc.―Anonymous

The point is great for hitching towards Oxford/Birmingham (M40) or M25 - also, there is a hatched-marking section, where a car can stop to pick you up even when the traffic is heavy.Always stand with a sign stating your destination, as a lot of traffic goes round M25.
Also, there is an OxfordTube bus stop nearby, so you can always take the bus if you are really stuck.

Hopefully I have marked this spot right! To get to Brighton: Get the 109 bus from Brixton and get off when the bus starts going a different way from the 'Brighton' signs. This spot is on the M23, next to a row of shops with space for parking outside (great for people to pull into!) It's opposite a big pub too.―Anonymous
