Either this is an excellent spot, it I just had excellent luck. But I waited five minutes, and the second car already stopped, and I got a ride all the way to Leeds. I had a sign saying "A1 - North".―mossenmoons

The junction is very large. Depending on where you want to go, it may or may not be easy to get a lift from the service station. If you want the A1 North, it will be difficult. The traffic around the junction and on the exit roads is moving too fast to safely hitch. Maybe try these if there's a traffic jam―Anonymous

London Gateway services. Whether or not this is a good space depends on where you're coming from. If you have just started your trip out of London going north then avoid this spot if possible. It's so close to London that people are unlikely to stop here - their journey has only just begun so why stop. Staples Corner is probably a better bet.―Anonymous

the worst place I have ever been, there is no real good spot to stand, it took me over 2 hours to get a ride. the ride was from a nice taxidriver who dropt me of on the M25, not even on a service station―Anonymous

I stood few meters back on the corner of petrol station so that cars came out on my right and passed by (slowed down) on my left. Went to St Albans (west) (had my sign) and nobody seemed to go there - got picked up by a guy who had just come from there and was kind enough to make a big detour. However I saw many drivers pointing east and many of the drivers questioned in the petrol station before that mentioned Cambridge. So that direction might be much luckier.―Agzas

The service area layout forces a lot of traffic through the Waitrose parking lot. Standing near where cars turned to leave it seemed like the best approach. Got a ride to Dartford/Thurrock after maybe 40 minutes.―Ednaxe

I just hitched this August 8th North to Leeds and I agree most people were going to London but others were going to Northampton and things like that, so it was okay to get to a better service station. Bloody far to walk with a backpack from Edgware tube though. Staples Corner better I agree.―Ben.lawson.merhaba

Nice spot, spent around 5min saturday early morning and got a ride to Oxford (so not exactly the main cars' target probably). Might have been luck, but on the other hand many cars were passing me.―Kub

Direction London - got a ride within 10 minutes (had a sign, but maybe was just lucky). The guy said he stopped because the roundabout slows the speed down enough.Should be also able to go the other direction of M25. The cars passing by were enough (end of the weekend, May, 7pm)

Direction Cambridge. Not perfect, but at least there are 2 lanes, so if somebody stops, he doesn't block the road. Got ride in 5 mins.―Anonymous

I can't say how good this place is, since I got picked up from a relative of a driver, who drove me earlier that day! Cars can stop next to the road on the green, but it might not be as intuitive, as for example a bus stop.―Anonymous
