Seems good. We got picked up in 3 minutes by people going to Derby. Seems like a lot of traffic is heading onto the M1 from here.―Alifeee

Maybe it was luck, but I got an almost instant ride to Derby from a guy that stopped to pick me up at the bus stop.―Anonymous

I put my thumb out at the bus stop going west on Derby Rd. and got a nearly instant pickup from a guy. Don't know if it was just luck, but I was shocked.―Anonymous

Waited for around an hour before getting a lift to Leeds on the M1 North. Slow cars, decent amount of traffic and space to stop.―Anonymous

Also note that if you walk through a field at the coach park end of the services you will reach a bus stop on the regular 24hr Skylink route linking Derby and Leicester with East Midlands airport, it is about £4 for a single ticket to either destination (2013)―Willochrome

Got stuck here for almost 6 hours (from 6pm, heading South to Birmingham) and no luck so night at the services was "fun." Traveling North might be a completely different story though.―Anonymous

[M1 SOUTH]I spent much time surveying the area around the services and there are not that many safe places to stop; The best place to hitch from seemed to be holding a sign out by the entrance to the services building and striking up conversations with people passing in and out. After about half an hour I found a hitch to Northampton Services, well on the way to London.

I've hitched from here twice, both southbound across the M42 to M5. The first time we got stuck for several hours and had to start approaching people as night was drawing in. We made it eventually. The second time I got a quick pickup here BUT misheard the guy and got dropped halfway along M42. Bad move - got really stuck. In my experience M42 south is quite sticky so try to do it in one ride if at all possible. If you're just heading down the M1 though, you'll be fine from here.―Anonymous
