traffic is not crazy, but this is still my pick of choice to get to england from france. i've had varying luck ranging from rides in 2h to, this time, getting there at 18:30 and only getting a lift at 10:00, with only 4h spent sleeping. i strongly recommend asking around, maybe with a sign.not huge amounts of traffic but very solid proportion of UK cars (seasonally dependent). i've found that many english cars can be downright mean and are often full, but don't get discouraged! there are also some nice ones worth waiting for.
easy enough to give up and go to calais if you're in a rush.
indoor bits close at 22:00 but i believe the one opposite stays open.
someone called the cops and staff lady vouched for me so they apologised and left me alone

Stood at the entrance to the petrol station and got a lift heading into London. Also got offered a lift to Milton Keynes inside the services when seen walking around with sign. Not loads of traffic but decent spot―ActingOutColours

It took a while to find someone, but at the end I asked someone who was filling his tank, going to Exeter.―johan92

Me and a friend waited only 15mins at around 7:30am and got a lift going to London. We stood just before the petrol station. It worked well as people are slowing down because of the lights and can pull in to the petrol station easily if they want to pick you up. Staff also let us use the toilet there.―UkHitcher

I've stopped here twice while hitchhiking south from Scotland to London. First time got a ride to Birmingham, and the second time to London. Both pretty quickly. Plus the services are comfortable, with free toilets, charging sockets etc. I would definitely stop here again when looking for a longer-distance ride.―mossenmoons

I arrived in the evening at 23:00.Because foot passengers are not allowed on the ferry during the night, I asked drivers in the parking lot if they can take me with them onto the ferry.
The good things is that you pay per car and not per passengers in the car, so I didnt have to pay for the ferry at all.

superb hitching point (service area) for bristol, birmingham etc.―Anonymous

It doesn't look like a great place as there's not much room to pull in but I've hitched twice from here and never waited more than a few mins. Good for getting to Brighton as it's just before the motorway (M23). Get the bus to Redhill and get off when you see the flyover. Hopefully I have marked this spot right! To get to Brighton: Get the 109 bus from Brixton and get off when the bus starts going a different way from the 'Brighton' signs. This spot is on the M23, next to a row of shops with space for parking outside (great for people to pull into!) It's opposite a big pub too.―Anonymous

Just to add some more detail here - This spot is at the start of the M4, so I've used it for Bristol etc. The best way to get there is to get to Chiswick Park tube station, either by tube or bus. When you get off the tube, walk straight out of the exit, over the bridge towards Chiswick High Road. Then turn right, and walk along the high road about 15 minutes. When you get to the big roundabout, you'll see a petrol station at the opposite side of the of the roundabout. Just after that petrol station is a kind of slip road heading towards Junction 2 of the M4. There is a layby cars can stop in.―Anonymous

There is a layby to hitch from, just before traffic lights, so cars must slow or stop. Never waited more than 30 mins for lift out of London or to Heston services.―Anonymous

This hitch-hiking spot lies just next to a bus stop, and just after a pedestrian crossing, so the traffic passing this point is quite slow. Good for getting onto the M3―Anonymous

Waited about 1.5 hours here and got a ride in August 2010. Wait JUST before the bus stop, and if someone stops they can pull right in.―Anonymous

Had a lot of problems finding somebody going south on the M25, but M4 seems to be easy. Was surprised by the lack of traffic.―Koendev
