Whether going East or West, expect a good wait unless you get lucky. I was heading West, although the clerk at the truck stop kicked me out for writing on a piece of cardboard.I would just get on the on ramp with a sign and you will eventually get a ride.

Try not to get dropped off here if you are going West into Rapid City or else expect a LONG walk. I was dropped off here from a truck and walked into Box Elder- local traffic only. I was lucky and a mailman happened to give me a ride into Rapid City.―Anonymous

Do not expect a ride towards Mount Rushmore. No room to pull over, although you could strike up conversations at local fast food. Otherwise expect to walk.―Anonymous

Heading East, got a ride to Sioux Falls after about an hour (Thursday at 8am). In general doesn't seem like people are too receptive to hitchhiking here, though. Thumbed for awhile, then held a sign for Sioux Falls.(female, 20s)

This location has decent traffic and I got picked up in around 2 hours. I tried to get a ride all the way to Denver, but the ride only took me to Buffalo, WY. It was actually an entire family on their vacation! How weird. Anyways, not a horrible spot, but it was super sunny and windy!―Anonymous
