earlier ride had dropped me right on the highway and I walked an hour here thumbing with no luck. really quick, got picked up by a super friendly old hippy guy, took me all the way to santa rosa.

he offered to take me all the way to SF if I stuck around after some stuff he had to do in santa rosa, said no and took train + bus from there.

Wide on-ramp for cars or trucks to pull over. Gas station and food nearby. In the summer, many hitchhike from this area so you may see a hitchhiker's sign that was left behind.
You can also catch a bus from San Francisco to this area before starting to hitchhike.

I flew a sign near the onramp going North here for cumulatively about 5 hours one day....not one person stopped. No good places to pull over, and it seems like most of the people driving this road are either cranky old ladies, or parents driving their teenagers (two kinds of folks I've never gotten a ride from).

I wouldn't recommend. Try the other 101 onramp on Santa Rosa Ave instead?

Had a sign for Eureka and another one saying 101N. It was a Tuesday afternoon in March but we got picked up in about 20 minutes and got a ride all the way past Eureka to Arcata! There isn't a legal area to pull over but anyone with a determination to pick you up certainly could do so safely as there are two onramp lanes.

Low traffic but decent space to pull off. Got a ride in 10 minutes.

Good traffic but not a lot of space to pull over. I only tried for about half an hour before walking south.
