I was trying to get to the UK, and damn, it was hard. In the end, I got stuck here for two days. After day and half when someone offered me a ride just to Calais, I agreed and bought a foot passenger ticket for the ferry. Don't get me wrong, it's possible. But you certainly need to be an experienced hitchhiker and know what you're doing. I wasn't, and I struggled a lot. Also, if you eventually decide to just go to Calais, be aware that the ferries can easily sell out and you might end up stuck in Calais for the night, which I do NOT recommend. Try to get to Dover as quickly as possible (and get some fish and chips).
