Roundabout. Cars going to motorway direction Chamonix do not have to pay but the normal road goes through Sallanches. There is also cars entering the motorway from Sallanches.―Anonymous

First péage (for the whole motorway) when going west. It might be a good idea to try to hitchhike here if you're stuck in the (south)east laying valley / villages and want to go far - just write "Péage de Cluses".This péage is just as good as any péage: Lots of traffic and low speed.
If you don't want to stand directly at the péage you have the option of standing right in front of the parking area that comes just after, here cars are still slow and you can catch more of the traffic.

Better to wait there than at the gas station before. It's actually a medium size toll but bigger the sign better it is. I used this spot to go to Sallanches and it worked well. It was winter time and belgian girls went to a ski resort near by―jurichezzbmx

Towards Chamonix it's best to stay at the Highway onramp just by the roundabout exit. From what we saw, most of the cars to Chamonix choose the highway―Anonymous
