I stood on top of the guard rail, a little before the parking spot as cars drive quite fast and it is right after a corner impacting visibility.

Most of the cars were heading towards Austria or Switzerland. But luckily a local German grandma with her two grandchildren took me to next rest area on the highway, meanwhile explaining to the kids that she also used to do that and explained what trampen means to them etc. :’)

Gas station, good to get lifts in direction Ravensburg

Good spot for hitching out of Weingarten towards direction Ulm. Make sure you have a sign. Cars can stop along the road.
