Hitched from the Eastbound shell. Took only a short time for a lift to Köln. Our driver was kind enough to drop us at the front door of our friends house―Anonymous

May favourite starting spot to get out of the area to the Netherlands/Belgium/France. So far has worked out for me fairly quickly every single time. This review is super late, but I was there in May in the afternoon and found folks going my direction in half an hour by asking around. It only took half an hour because they wanted to finish their meal (which, totally fair.) I think the finding itself only took about 10 minutes.

Great spot if you're hitchhiking from Cologne to the Netherlands. You can get here from Nievenheim train station and bus WE2. After that it's just a 15 minute walk to the station. If you look on Google satellite, you will spot a small trail after the bridge over the highway. It is traversable but I wouldn't recommend it as it leads through hunting grounds that are private property. Better to take the long way around. Either way, the service station is accessible on foot through a whole in the fence or on the small road.
Waited for 5 minutes, then found a friendly man and his girlfriend who took me one service station further to Geismühle. There was low traffic on Saturday, but I got lucky and found somebody quickly.

Good starting spot to get to Aachen and beyond to Belgium or NL, easy to reach with public transport too. I wasn't even there at a good time (Mid-November on a weekday, very foggy weather) and still found a ride to Aachen pretty quickly by asking around.―thebeekeeper

Decent Rasthof to continue further to the west (Belgium - Aachen - NL), You can even access it from Cologne by taking a train to Konigsdorf and walk from the station to the Services (Augustinus Str and Marienhofer Weg)―Anonymous

The traffic is too local and too sparse to make of this spot a logic start out of Cologne―Anonymous

Not much traffic, but all the local traffic around Köln is pretty much sorted here. Good for direction Krefeld/Nijmegen―Anonymous

Very good to get started, because every car here goes to the service area ville west. There's a pedestrian light with which you can stop the cars going on the autobahn, and then ask!―Anonymous

Much better entrance onto the Autobahn compared to direction from Koln, as cars have plenty of space to pull over and time to see you―Anonymous
