good spot to hitch north to picton, cars are still slow and heaps of space for the cars to pull over. probably not that good when a lot of people are tryin to hitch from a bit south in the city, cause they maybe get picked up first.directions: just cross the bridge and you'll see the spot, it's obvious

If you're going to the west coast this road looks like an enticing shortcut vs going via Nelson. Indeed, someone used the exact words, "enticing shortcut" and took me from the perfect hitch spot outside the supermarket to here.5 hours later:
There was tons of traffic, they could see me, there was space to pull over. Nobody stopped. Nobody was going to the west coast this way, everyone is just going to work in the vineyards and farms a few miles down the road, and they won't help A hitchiker.
I was told this by a guy who saw me waiting there 4 hous ago, and felt bad enough to drive me back to the Nelson road during his lunchbreak, the spot i was at in the first place, where I caught a ride in 5 minutes.
This road has AIDS, its quicker via Nelson. Don't bother unless you are genuinely happy to wait around for hours on end for nothing, and at best get dropped in the middle of knowhere.
I'm not the only person who's had issues with this road, it's not a shortcut, its a trap.

Plenty of traffic, but we waited a little while before getting a lift out of town. Most traffic heading further will be heading north towards Havelock/Nelson after Renwick, and a lot of the ferry traffic heading that way likely takes the 62 bypassing Blenheim.―luckyluke

Heading towards St Arnaud, we walked up and down this road searching for ample space for cars to stop - only the odd junction to a farm or yard. It is possible to hitch this road to St Arnaud, but most cars are only travelling to local vineyards. The nice fella that eventually took us to St Arnaud had to turn around further up and come back round for us. Be prepared for a long wait with no shade on a sunny day. Bring lots of water!―luckyluke

Nice spot to hitch, lots of traffic (heavily dependent on ferry schedule). Found a lift to Blenheim in just a couple of minutes.―luckyluke

Traffic is low, but the spot is great for hitching towards Blenheim. Arriving just before the service station closed, the staff gave us leftover pies.―Zenit

Fastest hitch ever! We were like let's try here. Our thumb was not even fully in the air yet when one of the many cars already stopped to give us a ride. Amazing spot! Plus next to a 4 square supermarket in case you get hungry.―Perezoso
