Punakaiki is famous for bieng where that German hotchiker got stranded for 3 days, went berserk, vandalised road signs, then got arrested.What the hell he was doing wrong I don't know, literally the first car stopped and took me to the next city. 1 minutes wait time. Germans eh?

Fairly long wait heading to Hokitika, but worth mentioning this was around 2 hours before sunset and we were still well and truly within Greymouth where a lot of traffic was clearly just travelling locally. We eventually found a ride from a fella heading to Christchurch, and we rode with him to Kumara junction just 16km south on the 6. I imagine this spot is a lot better earlier in the day. Use of a sign recommended.―luckyluke

There’s a spot right beside the blue sign if you are heading north. I was hitching late ~4pm and had to stay a night in backpackers, next day waited in rain 1,5 hours and got a ride to Greymouth. Low season can be really tough here―Carlitos

Not the busiest of roads after the road splits into the 6/65 but nice amount of room to pull over and traffic not too fast after the corner. We found a ride in 15 minutes heading to Greymouth, but the gentleman was heading to Franz Josef.―luckyluke

I was stuck here for 3 days. This is a stupid country. No rides whatsoever yet there was plenty of traffic. I am going back to France and never coming back.
