Me and my friend (both men) started off at Bulli pt and ventured to the starting point until a taxi driver came and stopped. He was commuting to Welly and offered a free lift. Got there in 5 hr with a lunch break―MrFahrenheit

Big area to pull over, good visibility, slow traffic. This is a good spot for lifts to taupo and is the biggest busiest road available, yet perfectly hitchable.―Anonymous

Outside a prison. Not the best place to hitch! But I still managed fairly quick, just put my backpackout front, made a friendly Wellington sign and smiled!―Anonymous

Very, very quiet road - as expected. However, giving it 3/5 as it is possible to hitch this road into the national park, (or to National Park town). 45 minute wait or so and we found a ride to National Park.―luckyluke

Perhaps it was the time of day (one hour or so before sunset), but we struggled to find a ride south on Route 1. It was only after about one hour that a nice local lady took us to Tūrangi. 3/5 because maybe this spot is great in the day time when folks are travelling further. Plenty of space to pull over and relatively slow traffic.―luckyluke

Good spot, easy to stop, lots of space, also a gas station. Not too much traffic but enough for hitchhiking. First ride I was unsure about, so be careful who offers. Managed to hitch first half to Turangi, then got a ride to Taupo.―jolanda
