No luck - super quiet road, my guess is most of the cars we saw were only travelling short distances out of town. If you are trying to get to Tongariro National Park, just stick to Route 1 and head down to Tūrangi instead.―luckyluke

Long straight road with a wide shoulder cars to stop. Fast traffic speeds and not too many cars. Found a lift to Tokoroa within 15 minutes.―luckyluke

Plenty of traffic, albeit quite fast. Not the best space for a car to pull over but there is a tiny layby just before the road distances sign. Waited 5 minutes for a lift to Taupō. 4/5 only because of traffic speed and pullover space.―luckyluke
