It's hard to say how good this place is. We were heading towards Sofia/Istanbul -> the driver heading to Pirot left us there saying it was a good place. Generally, cars don't drive very fast there – they see you and your sign, but there's no gas station or anything like that. After about half an hour, we managed to catch a truck heading to Sofia. There are often queues of trucks at the border, so there's a chance you'll cross the border and ask drivers one by one if they can take you to Istanbul. We finally made it to Sofia that day, but I think there's a chance you'll catch a driver going further.―Moonhans

If you're heading towards Sofia/Istanbul, this is an average spot for hitchhiking; more drivers head towards Greece/Macedonia. We tried to hitchhike at a gas station for 2.5 hours, then moved directly onto the highway. After 45 minutes, a driver heading to Pirot stopped us. I don't know if we were unlucky or if it's actually a bad spot. It's hard to say. (Perhaps we should ask the drivers at the Nais Hotel on the other side.) Overall, it's a good place for a wild camping trip – there's a quiet meadow behind the fence, and if you need one, there's a shop and a toilet.―Moonhans

At this point, transit traffic consisted of long way going trucks and individual vehicles is joined by locals from Bela Palanka. There's small petrol/gas station mostly used by locals, and parking area used by trucks but not so frequently.This spot is okay for getting a ride towards Pirot, Dimitrovgrad and Bulgarian border or further. Visibility is average, but there is occasional police patrol standing nearby, so most frequent drivers slow down here.
Here you can hitchhike if you get a ride from Nis till Bela Palanka, and want to go further east. You can walk to this point from the center of the Bela Palanka town in some 15 minutes. You're probably going to be the only hitchhiker here.

This spot is good for getting a ride towards Bulgarian border if you happen to be in the city of Pirot.You are standing just after a junction where ~65% of locals join the highway, and all transit traffic have to pass towards east. There's a tunnel some 200 meters backwards, so drivers usually slow down as they get out of it and pass the junction. The road here is a bit wider in a way of helping shoulder track, so it's relatively safe for you to stand here and drivers to stop to pick you up.
There's a small household just meters away with generous locals, where you can refill your bottle with water or so.
Sometimes there are few locals hitchhiking here as well towards Dimitrovgrad and a border with Bulgaria.
You can reach this spot walking some 10 minutes from the center of Pirot.

hitchhike here in direction to Nis and further. Visibility is okay, and there's some abandoned parking lot next to a road. Traffic here consists of all international vehicles crossing over Serbia coming from Bulgaria/Turkey, and locals from nearby towns (except Bela Palanka and Babusnica locals but these are minor number and they usually don't go further than to Nis). You will most likely be the only hitchhiker here.―Anonymous

Easy to get to if you arrive to the city center (there's a bus stop close by). Not a lot of traffic - locals + trucks. Got a ride almost to Dimitrovgrad quite quickly.―Viki99

Good spot at the toll to hitchhike out of Nis for both directions! Only disadvantage is that you have to walk a few kilometers to get here (see hitchwiki for directions!) and that there’s no shadow.―Anonymous

Not a great spot honestly.It's the lane that trucks need to go through to merge again onto the highway.
Quite a bit of them will actually stop but I did the mistake of accepting a ride to Pirot. From Pirot there's no way you're getting anywhere, if you decide to go there, go to the bus station and you'll get a 4€ ticket to Nis. From Nis it was fairly easy to get to Belgrade or further.
