Really depends on the people on the day as to how quickly you get a lift. The area in general is difficult.

A 470 towards Merthyr, Brecon. Fast traffic and a semi-illegal place where you have to stand, but you'll probably find somebody going north :)

The best place in Pontypridd to go South. The roundabout is tight but wide. Stand on it so people see you. Do not stand on the slip road, you will be moved and traffic is travelling too fast.

Waited here 90 minutes at 2pm on a Friday; lots of traffic, but couldn't even get a 15 minute ride down to Newport. Decided to get the train from nearby Pontypool & New Inn station to Newport, but thence found it difficult to get out of that city going East. However as a stance it is fairly good; you are visible to those at the traffic lights who can also pull in to the service station/McD complex.

Taking the train to Taffs Well and walking a few minutes gives access to this roundabout, which is not perfect but people were not driving fast and there were construction works which created good spots to stop.
