There are many laybys in the Loch Lomond area. Probably the best one is one mile out of the village of Balloch, where local trains from Glasgow terminate. There is a lot of traffic, the layby is wide and it also doubles as a bus stop - buses from Glasgow Bus Station to the Isle of Skye, Campbeltown and Oban stop here.

Good spots are more than a rarity if you want to get out of Gourock to the south, so this long straight stretch without any lay-bys is probably your least bad bet.

This roundabout is a bit chaotic, but you'll get somebody to pull in where the marker is. If you are several people, take strategical positions, so cars coming from the south and the east can see you a bit earlier.

I was hitching to Fort William and got a lift within 10 mins on a Monday afternoon at 3.30pm to Tyndrum. Lots of traffic at this time and the cars have to slow down for the roundabout. There is plenty of room for cars to pull into the turnoff to the left so that you can get in.

The two of were Hithching to Gleoncoe and got a ride in 15 minutes by a Audi quattro convertible. The guy was driving through the glen 100 mph and we had a sunny day! It was the best drive of my life. :D
We got here for free because of the friendly employees at the Queen street railway station in Glasgow!

Pretty fine place to thump up. In mz case, I got a lift immediately, cause cars were stucked in the traffic jam so they had time to check both me and my sign. [there was diverted traffic in that time]

Took the bus 6a from the centre to the petrol station. Asked around to people and the first lady we asked took us to Loch Lomond our destination

The spot always works - there's traffic lights to slow cars down and bus stand for them to stop. I hitched couple of times from here, although need to ignore many grumpy city people passing through. Disadvantage that is far away from city center (I walked, but, of course, you can take a city bus)
