Everyone I spoke to was going North so it was really tricky. I waited by the exit but it wasn’t busy enough for the cars to be stopped so no one pulled over. Tried the same at the exit of the car park with no luck. I approached people at the benches by the food hall and most were going North, or there was one just not interested in giving a lift! Of those who were going North they were very lovely and wished me the best of luck getting to my destination and said they would have been happy to help if I was going the opposite way. My final destination was Peterborough. Finally I met a lovely woman and her two children who offered me a lift to Sheffield and I ended my hitching from there and got a train. Not sure what I could have done differently here. It seemed like an unlucky day.

Use this spot for all directions except Manchester. The place is not great, but persevere and you'll get a ride. For more info, see http://www.hitchwiki.org/Sheffield

Used this place a few times for heading North or South on the A1. Generally long waits but quiet and safe

Trying to get South out of Sheffield. I think it was about a half hour wait. Not a good spot.

I got off at the inter-city bus station and this spot was not far away from there. I was heading to Norfolk and was probably lucky. Not an idyll spot, not much traffic in the early morning, but there's space for cars to stop up the hill.
Most chances when going to the East (North or South)

Spot is next to the M1 and there is a hotel nearby to freshen up. But there is a lot of local traffic. Going south, the cars were in the inner lane. I got lucky, and don't think my experience would reflect how challenging it normally would be.

Recently renovated service station. Great for getting out of Sheffield. We asked around for a lift for only a few minutes before getting an empty coach to Leeds!

Excellent spot to join Newcastle ! A lot of trafic and a good place to park for the drivers, although a lot of of them were going to the south.

Great services, very busy and all southbound! Asked one person and got a lift straight to Bristol! Another time only took 10 mins for a lift to M4
