(on the Dover -> Calais ferry) we paid £30 and joined the ferry as foot passengers. there were lots of people driving off the ferry. we were 3 people and did not find a lift for all of us, but split into 2 and 1, and both groups found lifts to London. we asked almost everyone on the ferry and found 2-3 offers.

we were heading to Dover. it took a while to get a lift, but we were 3 people. our friends arrived to hitch after us and took a lift before us (cheeky). eventually found a lift to Maidstone after trying several spots (food court, fuel station, roundabout). Lots of French/German/Belgian/etc cars around.

West Thurrock service area. Good to get lifts to Europe! Have done it several times in 2006. £5 from central London to get there. Any questions: freddy_e@gmx.de

Probably a good spot still to hitch in all direction (North - West) from London but it is more harsh to continue towards the South-East from there.

I agree with the other post. You can get access to this place from the road that drives paralel to the motorway, the fence is broken at the point where my marker is spotted. There are buses stoping on the road, you should be able to catch one from swanley towards here. Becareful, there is a MacDonalds.

I was heading to North trying to get to the M6, Didn't go so well, The cars at the mall seemed to be all locals, and truckers couldn't take me due to insurance bla bla. At around 20:00 a Services dude chatted with me, Told me to ask the truckers only and wait at the exit of the Truck Petrol station in between. He then helped me out to find a Lorry heading north, In about 45min "we" found a ride to Bermingham

Most of the traffic here was lorries that weren't allowed to take hitchers (maybe insurance policies have changed since 2006?). Took two hours to get a ride to Maidstone.

Ideal for getting to Maidstone, had another 15 minute wait asking people filling up. There's also a McDonalds round the corner which is usually if you're a pair.

Twice I was hitchhiking from there to the southeast, and never had to wait longer then 10 min.

Yes, also got a few fast lifts from there, the spot is naturally perfect. But! There is a NO STOPPING sign and many otherwise willing drivers are probably afraid. There's still the brave ones though :)
