Waited for around an hour before getting a lift to Leeds on the M1 North. Slow cars, decent amount of traffic and space to stop.―Anonymous

Also note that if you walk through a field at the coach park end of the services you will reach a bus stop on the regular 24hr Skylink route linking Derby and Leicester with East Midlands airport, it is about £4 for a single ticket to either destination (2013)―Willochrome

Got stuck here for almost 6 hours (from 6pm, heading South to Birmingham) and no luck so night at the services was "fun." Traveling North might be a completely different story though.―Anonymous

[A38 EASTBOUND]It took a matter of seconds holding up a "DERBY :)" sign in order to get me a hitch there on a recent sunny weekday afternoon. This spot is a safe 1.9 mile walk from Lichfield Trent Valley Station, well connected to Birmingham and the West Coast Main Line. One thing to be wary of is that the layby is not long after the brow of a hill and traffic is moving quickly so it's advisable to stand closer to the exit of the layby so as to allow traffic the time to stop.

[M1 SOUTH]I spent much time surveying the area around the services and there are not that many safe places to stop; The best place to hitch from seemed to be holding a sign out by the entrance to the services building and striking up conversations with people passing in and out. After about half an hour I found a hitch to Northampton Services, well on the way to London.

Stuck at this garage for four hours in the freezing cold. If you're going south on the M42, try to do it all in one go if you can, I can't explain why but I always find it real sticky. The caretaker/attendant guy at this garage was friendly, at least.―Anonymous

Direction Burton-on-Trent / Lichfield / Birmingham. A lot of cars and trucks, mostly going fast but thanks to high traffic they often slow down. Very visible spot.―Anonymous

Cars on the road were going too fast to stop. Had to go around petrol station asking people for 20 minutes until someone was able to take me―ExtreamTrowser
