After I got dropped off I was kind of worried because the sun was setting and I was really in the middle of nowhere at a random junction. I was also worried about visibility, because it didn’t look like there were any streetlights. Cars we also sparse, as only every couple minutes would a car/ truck actually turn onto the ramp in the direction I needed. A pickup truck passed me and I’m pretty sure he was rolling coal at me but it also could have been intentional because he did it again on the highway so it could have just been something wrong with his truck. Luckily, after 30 minutes of waiting a semi truck stopped for me. The driver didn’t have great English but he asked me if I needed money or something. I told him that I didn’t, but then he asked me where I was going, and I told him Rolla, which was an hour down I-44. He said okay, get in, and cleared a space for me next to him. I was sitting on a box of waterbottles, and he offered me the food he had (grapes and oatmeal). He is from Vietnam and has been driving this truck in the states for nine years ever since he moved. His English name is Tommy, and his Vietnamese name is Phúc. He has a wife and a fourteen year old daughter in Los Angeles, and he spends ten days driving food from Los Angeles to New Jersey, and then back, and then he gets to spend a week at home. He knows the name of every town on the highway. Every year he goes with his family to visit Vietnam, in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). He drives around eleven hours a day, and that night he was planning on stopping in Oklahoma City, which was another six hours. He loves to listen to country music as he drives, and he calls with his family. After the hour drive to Rolla, he dropped me off at exit 185, and tired to give me an $100 dollar bill. I told him I couldn’t accept that, and that I didn’t need the money. He said I should buy food for my girlfriend, but still I said I couldn't accept it. Finally he agreed to only give me $5, in return for my buying something nice for me girlfriend and I said I would say it is from him :). Overall one of the nicest people I have met. I thanked him in Vietnamese (Cảm ơn).―BHS

Tried hitching a ride from here twice and both times had no trouble getting a ride. Only problem was that people were not going very far(not more than fifty miles) so if you have a destination which is far, I would recommend to get to interstates after hitching the state highways―Keep trying

Its a state highway 63. As there is not much traffic and people are in a relaxed mood so there is a good chance of getting picked up.―Anonymous
