Heading towards Lyon. Great spot with lots of space and traffic. Turns out the person who picked me up saw me at the roundabout 20km back with the sign for Lyon but someone already picked me up so when he saw me here he immediately stopped!
At the roundabout heading towards Lyon with a sign. Lots of traffic but no one really stopping. I guess mostly local traffic in the area. Got a ride with someone about 20km further. I had better luck there.
Heading towards Geneva with a sign. Got a ride with an Afghan man going to Geneva in 15 minutes standing at the exit. Lots of people going long distances and got a lot of smiles and waves. Would recommend to get out of Basel towards Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich etc.
the traffic was not best, i tried all three streets but liked this one the best, there is a spot where car can stop just after the stop sign, so plenty of time for drivers to decide
Horrible spot with basically no cars. I got really lucky someone was going towards Switzerland where I was going near Liechtenstein (the second car). Would not recommend this spot though.
Had a sign FL for Liechtenstein right next to the petrol station entrance where there was plenty of room to stop. No one stopped except one person going in the opposite direction. Eventually I got a ride with an Austrian living in Dornbirn to a petrol station near the town on the motorway. Ok spot but mainly locals and Germans. Difficult to find someone going south.
Great spot in direction of Lindau and lots of people stopped. One person gave me 5 euros. And many people gave waves and smiles. Only issue was my sign said Alps and it was quite vague so people didn't know where I was going. Partially my fault but there was also a lot of traffic only going to the next city.
Heading towards Germany. Was going around with a sign for DE around all the trucks but no one was going or they were staying for the night there. I moved to this spot and within 2 minutes got a ride in a Porsche to Nuremberg going 285km/h on the autobahn!
In theory a good spot towards Germany but I waited 90 minutes near the exit with a sign for DE and only got a ride to near Plzen with a kind couple. Traffic was moderate.
Going towards Prague. Very good spot to catch trucks or cars going in the direction of Prague or further. A little bit annoying to reach though. I went up the slope next to the highways bridge to the west of the service station and walked on the outside of the barrier next to the highway for about 500 metres. Got a ride with a Moldovan truck driver who was going all the way to Ireland!

Going towards Kaunas. I think I was very unlucky since not a single person stopped even with the very high traffic and good visibility. Waited an hour before catching a bus further out of the city.
Going towards Brno. It was getting late and there was less and less traffic. Even though there is local traffic a lot are also going to Czechia and further. A couple people stopped but they were locals before a car turned around to pick me up to Brno. People didn't seem too willing to pick me up but if it was earlier I think there would have been more traffic.
Heading towards Trencin. Lots of smiles and waves and a couple people stopped but no one was going far at all. I eventually got a ride with someone to Kral'ovany and caught a train to Trencin.
Heading towards Slovakia border. Got picked up within 10 minutes by a Polish couple on holidays. They were going towards Wroclaw. They even bought me some Polish cheese!
Heading towards Poland with sign PL. Good place with decent amount of cars but mostly local traffic so you might have to wait a while but a car should stop eventually. The person who picked me up was going to Lublin. I ended up leaving him at Suwalki.
Heading towards Kaunas. Maybe I was unlucky but I waited here with my thumb for a while and nobody ever stopped. A kind man came up to me from the café and asked where I was going. He ended up bringing me to his home near Kaunas and I slept the night there.
Great place with room to stop towards Lithuania. I got a lot of waves and nods but eventually got a ride to Vilnius with an Estonian man who was hoping for a hitchhiker!

Seemed like a good spot to go to peja, but a lot of locals passed. Also it was a Sunday. But after a long time I got lucky and a family from Kosovo picked me up. I wanted to go to Peja and they would have brought me there ( even though it wasn’t on their way), but they told me about the waterfalls. So they drove me to the waterfalls. It was really really crowded, beautiful but also a lot of trash.
Best spot to leave qujing, i got picked up after 5 minutes by a truck driver going directly to guiyang :)
Used a sign. Just drive close with a electric acioter and walk to the opposite side of tve road from the prison.

climbed up from the bus stop directly north of the service station, very thick with foliage, i recommend try the path to the east. lots of people on the sunday i tried it. non italians were far more receptive to me asking for a ride. got a ride from a lovely french couple to another service station near la spezia to try and get a ride to nice.

Good spot, I stood a bit past the point, right behind the crossing, but cars are quite slow and there is plenty of space to stop
Had a local take me to the rest stop near the Mondsea. An interesting spot, lots of traffic and it’s an intersection so people can pull in easily. Would def recommend heading to the Mondsea if you have no luck at this spot. Also the sun is beaming at you in the summer so just be aware haha.
This spot is decent. Small rest area but plenty of people stopping there. Had a guy take me to Salzburg because he was returning back home. Might not be the best spot though because again it’s kind of small.
Pretty good place to start your hitchhike out of the city. I was trying to head East and local was able to take me to road stop near by. I had 2 locals stop as well.
After reading the comments idk I guess this place is just a hit or miss. Got here around 6 PM and tried asking around a bit, stood by the exit, and stood in front of the gas station for about 3 1/2 hours and had no luck. The place is beautiful though so I camped by the lake and tried again next morning. Next morning I waited another 3 hours until someone offered to take me near Wien/Vienna. There was a good amount of people in the morning but idk they didn’t really care to see or look at me lol. So yeah I think my luck was dwindling and you might have a better experience than me. I think it’s still worth to hitchhike here as one of the primary spots people stop at and head towards east potentially.

Very chill spot with gas station and McDonalds next to the highway towards Eastern Europe. Givin it 4 stars since there wasn’t a lot of people on a Sunday around 9 AM. Lots of local plates but I got very lucky with a family go to swim near Bratislava, where in which I wanted to go. Probably help’s askin around too.

We were trying to get a ride to get into A3, which later connects to A1 (we are going to Köln). We decided to try this spot since was quite close from our accommodation, but no luck, only 1 car stopped to tell us that we better go to Port de la Chapelle, as here we wouldn’t find a ride. There’s not many space for a car to stop, as is after a round point and drivers are more worried about the traffic lights around.
I started hitchhiking on the road right after the exit of the gas station. As soon as I put the backpack down and the thumb out, somebody called me from the gas station to offer me a ride.
It was a Saturday and there is very little traffic in this city. One man who just finished his job at the airport stopped for us but had to go east unfortunately.
He and another driver told us to stand on the other side of the road but google maps said the onramp in the east would be the route to go West. Anyway after that 2nd driver we decided to move closer to the onramp more west on foot (1 hour walk) and try there.
The first person I asked was going to Erfurt and took me all the way to Bad Hersfeld. It was evening so there wasn't much traffic, maybe that's also why the traffic was more long distance. I think the deserted vibe of the gas station made people take pity on me which greatly helped me haha.
Yeah exactly what the other comment said. I walked 30mins to this spot from the highway and it was worth it. The next gas station was small but it is the last one in a long time so many people going towards Giessen stop there apparently.
I got dropped off here by accident, made some mistake with my gps. I wanted to go in the direction of Giessen, which is unlikely from that stop. But even cars going on the A3 towards Cologne didn't stop for me. There wasn't a lot of traffic in the early evening, it was mainly just truckers getting ready for the night and staring at me.
It's not fantastic, but it's fairly easy to stop and people go slowly. Many city people who aren't going long distances. But they smile and wave kindly. I wanted to go north and had A5 on my sign. In the 20 minutes I was standing there 4 people stopped who were all going south on the A5. In the end I took a ride just to get out of the city and onto a A5 highway entrance.
weekend not so many cars, standing at the bus stop is nice cause cars aren't as fast yet and there's much space for them to stop. on the N2 here the cars are very fast. could probably go south or north from this spot as there were cars going both ways
don't get dropped here (at least not if you're trying to get to Monaghan), this direction is the way people are driving back into town, not the other side of the roundabout is what I gathered
there's a big drive in for people to stop, lots going past midday, signed for armagh which maybe was too ambitious and you'd be quicker going to lurgan or portadown
everyone was so happy to see me! not that many people going west on the M1 but I got picked up quick enough, there's a shoulder on side of road and while it's past the 'no pedestrians' sign it'll work and people will pull in there for you
I think between 9:00 to 12:00 it’s a good time, because people don’t rush to go to ushguli, so they have breakfast first.

Great Spot, as a couple we didnt even wait 2 minutes and a nice guy picked us up directly to Thessaloniki and even drove us to the Center. Just be careful to Not stand in the way of Cars. We used a sign.

Great Spot, a lot of traffic in direction of greece. Recommend by the locals. We were there as a couple and got a ride to Kulata (Border). And we Had a sign with Sandanski
Prpbably a great place to go to dresden because we got offered like 4 times. We were going to leipzig tho. Even though this place is just before the turn on the highway there weren't a lot of people who could take us there. Eventually got picked up by a couple who dropped us of in thr middle of Leipzig.
Nobody was stopping, only some people were showing that they aren't going far. At the end I decided to go back to previous spot as I thought it might be better
work perfectly for a local destination (lovos ice for me)
but work also for dresden/berlin, two guy w le were taken after an hour there
i recommend it you got a lot of space for cars and full visibility
get a sign !
