Heading to Belgium. Arrived here at 13.30 on a Friday, left at 8.45 the next morning. Spent the first 3 hours thumbing at the exit on the side of the road, then started doing laps of the car park and asking people. No luck, no-one even going towards Europe. More European plates earlier in the afternoon but by early evening it was mostly UK cars. Lots of Polish vans and European trucks but none of them seemed at all willing. Had about 6-7 offers of lifts to Ashford/Folkestone/Dover, but held out for the channel crossing. Lost hope by 7pm, so put up my tent in the woods before it got too dark. Started again at 6.45 the next morning. On my 3rd lap of the car park I found a German couple who took me all the way to my destination in Belgium! My sense is that asking people directly is much more likely to pay out with a lift over the channel, but thumbing by the exit can get you to Dover pretty quickly.―Wienerpolser
