Waited 1 hour halfway to Rijeka but it was like 5 in the morning. I think its a good spot, easily reached by bus.―TajineMachine

2 guys with backpacks, we tried the hitchhike spot from the guy from 2013 and it still kinda works. High traffic, drivers have nice place to stop, but very very low success rate. Waited 135 minutes until we got a ride to Zagreb. Got 2 signs: "Zagreb" and "highway".Got there by bus from Zadar from the main bus station. It was bus number 4 but these things change over time. Just get to the main bus station and I strongly believe you will manage.
Long wait but got all the way to Zagreb

Mostly fully packed family cars going on holidays. We were two men (czech.asian and ukrainian) hitchhiking to Rijeka. The beat way to get a ride was to cold approach drivers stopping at the petrol station. There a lot of traffic tho.―Anonymous

We took a train ride from Graz as we didn’t feel like hitchhiking from the city. There is a plenty of space in surrounding area to camp as well. We got to this petrol station around 10am. There was already a lot of traffic mostly fully packed family cars. We cold approached drivers and got a ride all the way to Zagreb.―Anonymous

croatia joined schengen in 2023 so this border is no longer strictly controlled and cars might be more willing to pick you up. but still, if you can, try get dropped at the service station before this one. we might have been here longer but we got a ride quick enough to zagreb from someone going to bosnia.―Leslie

a lot of german, austrian and hungarian cars here going north and east as well as slovenians going to maribor, less traffic for zagreb but that was maybe the time of the year. very busy spot but in summer mostly families or cars with not enough room for two hitchhikers. we tried first asking for rides to zagreb but got a lift after we put novo mesto on a sign and asked around.―Leslie

Good place.A decent amount of traffic, although most of it are full cars going on vacation.
Got there in the morning by bus from Zagreb, and found a shade at the end of the gas station.
A couple going on vacation took us all the way to Vodice on the coast near Split.

Loads of traffic, slow, wait just at the toll station, cars will see you, and the police doesn't mind. Great spot!―Anonymous

Average traffic, not much, not empty. I held a sign saying Zagreb, got a truck driver going there.―Anonymous

Arrived late in the evening and asked some people to Salzburg but no one took me. Slept in the near by Forrest on the other side of the highway and tried the next day. Waited for 30min before a Serbian guy who was going to belgrad took me to Zagreb―Finn

This bus stop is the best place along this road. It still took an hour to get a lift, but at least there is plenty of traffic, and a good place for them to stop.―Anonymous

Direction : ZagrebAfter the toll or after the border... I waited 4h during big weekend departure for summer hollydays! Zagreb is just 13km after, but people don't want to take you (funny that numerous people on hollydays told me that they have no time to pick me up!).
If you come from Ljubljana, my advice would be that you accept to be picked up only if the driver goes to Zagreb, not just the border.

the busstop opposite of the HYUNDAI automobile dealer next to the KONZUM supermarket is a good opportunity to catch a ride westward on autobahn A1 to slovenia. negative: there are plenty of cars commuting (only drive around in the zagreb area) at this spot, telling from the "ZG" on most license plates. positive: there is a lot of traffic, the place is very-very safe for cars to stop and all drivers have to go slow because of the traffic light. on my personal rating from 1 (poor) to 10 (excellent) i will rate this spot a 9 to 10 even if it took me more than 30 minutes to find a driver taking me over the border to slovenia.―Anonymous

you can hitchhike from here up to mount SLJEME, to the television tower, the ski area, the restaurants and the hotels. there is always cars that bring guests to the hotels on top of the mountain or wanderers in their cars. the national park authority took me up in their jeep in march 2010 after a 10 minutes waiting time. the road is a one way lane, the way down from mount sljeme into the zagreb basin is 5 kilometers westward (a one way road as well).―Anonymous
