Almost the same story as Danterp3, got dropped off here. It's a really good spot when you're searching for someone that's going to Paris. It's a horrible spot to find someone going up north and taking people.

We needed a ride to (or actually past) calais, a french guy actually drove us there while he came from Dunkerque and needed to go to Brittany. We hadn't even finished our plate & I was asking the people while the other one was writing. After just 2 letters we already had a ride. Ask politely and try to start with French if you think their French (parlez vous anglais, or something will help)

I never had any problems with the gandarmerie while hitchiking from peages. We mostly nodded nicely and said Bonjour and they would reply nicely. Probably had a french dude with a bad day.

Waited about an hour for a lift south to Paris. Most drivers said there were local. Eventually picked up by a British car. One point to note is that the station building said it shuts at 22:00. So try not to get stuck here on a cold night!

Looks promising. But it isn't. I agree.

I saw the same angry message :)

Found a ride here to Brest! But it took a long time...

This is the best spot in Abbeville to catch a ride. Here you will find a trucker's stop restaurant called L'Auberge Fleurie Restaurant. Behind the restaurant you will find a lot of truckers stopping for a nap or to eat. Ask around for the direction you are traveling in. BONUS - you can eat a ton of food here for cheap!

I was dropped off here and told I could get another ride in the direction of Rouen if I stood here. I thought it made sense considering I was standing by a sign that pointed "ROUEN" down the road I was standing on. Turned out that it was senseless and I had to walk across town to get to the spot where people actually pass through to go in the direction Rouen. My advice, DO NOT STOP IN ABBEVILLE. I was at this spot in particular for 2 hours, and it took me 8 hours in total to get out of town!

Absolutely terrible! After having a mini meal before continuing our journey a crazy french guy appeared and started shouting, waving his arms madly and impeding us to get to the parking lot, which was literally 15 metres past the toll gates (peage). We tried to sneak around to the parking lot behind the fences, but his hitch-hiker-hobo radar was very sensitive, so he appeared out of nowhere again. After being insulted numerous times in french and threatened with Gandarmerie, we gave up and walked 6 km north to the nearest petrol station. Don't go there.

Looks promising. But it isn't. There's enough space to pull over, cars aren't going very fast, but people don't seem to be very willing to pick up hitch-hikers. We managed to get out of there only because we went to the petrol distributors and asked directly (and luckily we got a ride straight to London).

There's an entry on the back of one of the sign just as the curve starts. Someone hadn't been picked up for a long time and apparently got really angry and upset, so he wrote his opinion about drivers using strong language and brave descriptions.

Asking drivers for a ride on petrol station. After 30 minutes I managed to get a ride, but the staff threatened me to call the police, because it was "dangerous"

Only few cars, but you can talk well to the people.
