got a lift of out marseille after hours to this gas station, which has loads of cars coming and going (at least between 3PM and 4PM while i was there). i asked everyone a lift to Nimes with my broken french, and for what i understood there were loads of locals, and people directed to Marseilleeventually got a lift to arles

a truckdriver gave me a ride to montpellier after 15 min. before, two people had stopped: one going to nîmes, another one to lyon. so three cars in 15 minutes !―Mikan

Good if you go north. BIG MISTAKE if you are going to Marseille/Nice. If you are going to Marseille from here, it helped me to go to the Remoulins toll to change direction and go back to the toll between Nimes and Montepellier, where you can catch the cars that go to Marseille―Cuch
