Kind of the only decent spot towards Bulgaria, police spend a lot of time here just as locals for coffee.I've been trying for 3h until night with the little traffic from the petrol station (police was there) and 4h straight on the highway the next morning with a sign BG - СРФИЯ.
Most cars were completely full, I left with a big beer box under my legs and my backpack on my knees, that was the only room available in the car, but I made it to Sofia.

Restaurant where many Turkish trucks stop. Your chance to get rides towards Belgrade or Sofia.―Anonymous

ideal hitchhiking position in the village of Prosek, actually a parking area for trucks and joint place for all the roads going from Nis towards Bulgaria and Turkey. Visibility is excellent, place forces drivers to slow down as there's incoming long curve and lower ranked road entering the canyon, and also there are many trucks stopping by until they set off towards Bulgaria/Turkey.―Anonymous

Here, you may catch 70-80% of all locals driving out of the city towards Bulgarian border, but in most cases these are local rides to places on the way.―Anonymous

Petrol station in this town. Right after the station, there's a curve that leads uphill, straight out of town towards Knjazevac, Zajechar and further. All drivers and trucks that are going through eastern Serbia using this main road have to pass via this point.
As it is still town and there's an uphill curve, traffic here is slow and visibility is very good.
This is the most logical point to hitchhike in Svrljig into direction north (not to Nis).

hitching point to places in eastern Serbia and further to Bulgaria (Vidin), Danube and Romania.Visibility is average for cars getting off from motorway, but good for locals coming from Nis, as they have to slow down in the curve while joining the road. Average number of trucks here, but many cars willing to pick you up all the way to Zajechar (7km away from border point with Bulgaria, close to Vidin/Belogradchik).
Generally, vehicles have to slow down here. Downside is lack of any roadside store/restaurant/parking, these are available some 1500 meters further in the village Malcha (you're standing at the edge of a village).

have in mind that this hh point is not placed correctly. The place with a few restaurants is couple of hundred meters down the road to the east―Mpetrovic

Decent spot: nobody stopped after over half an hour with a sign reading Sofia, but behind me a Turkish truck driver was done resting and took me to the Bulgarian border.―Maxim1110

Bus mentioned in previous comment stops next to two roadside restaurants called "Cale Magistrale" and "Ivan", the first one has neon light sign STOP, easy to recognize, and local bus drivers know where you want to get off if you mention this two, or just say Prosek village bus stop. Bus takes you exactly at the place for hitchhiking. You can also get this bus to Prosek at bus stop at in front of city hospital, so you don't have to catch it at Skull Tower if you aren't near there. Also, bus to Prosek could be catched from city main bus station terminals. Ticket is in a range of 100-150 dinars (1Euro is apr. 116 dinars at the time of writing this)―Mpetrovic

previous comment is right about the bus. However, at this place on a motorway, vehicles drive very very fast. The good side is visibility of hitchhiker. Still, it is not allowed (in Serbia) to stand/walk on a motorway, so you risk being stopped by police and getting a mandate.―Mpetrovic

An alternative hh place to hitch rides to the east (in direction to Bulgaria). Alternative as if you are somewhere in near, it might take you a long long time to get to the center of the city and catch local buses to Prosek village hh spot. Here, this is actually a parking lot and a petrol station. Access to this petrol station is through broken fence behind it, there are even some locals using this as shortcut to their properties from the other side of a motorway. Hitchhiking here is okay as this is a parking/petrol station so technically not an open motorway. Visibility is average/good for speeding vehicles, but excellent for those that stopped at the station.―Anonymous
