Spot is visible to westward cars coming onto the highway and the gas station. However, cars coming onto the highway are often accelerating, and on the lookout for cars merging in. They might not be able to notice you, and even if they do it is hard to stop in time.
There is a crash barrier which can make you less visible too though it does make you much safer.
To get from our normal pedestrian roads to the gas station, there is a side road behind the toll booth office that is not monitored.
This day was just before the eclipse in Spain so there were more foreign plates. But the traffic was a bit slower than some other highways I've been to.
The man who picked me up was a Lithuanian driving to Oviedo, and there's no reason to believe that people would only be doing short hops here.

After one hour someone took me to Eibar Train Station. Decent spot but from the metro its quite a walk. With the Bus its quicker but you have to pay

Tried hitching to bilbao with the thumb didnt work at all. After 35 minutes i used my laptop as a Bilbao Sign. After 5 minutes someone picked me up. Even at a late time it worked. Decent

Quickly found someone to take me to Llodia. A nice guy that really helped me find a good follow up spot.

I arrived there with the bus A3515, I then asked around and the first car I asked took me to France!! 🇫🇷

The gas station has the advantage to be accessible by foot in one hour from Burgos. However, it's quite small. I was there on a Sunday and there were not so many people. I preferred hitching at the entrance of the highway rather than the station to maximise the number of cars that could see me.

The spot is good, you can see drivers from both roads and they are driving slow. It's still before the highway sign (so legal). Anyway we tried twice before success. In the end we removed all signes and got a driver who was willing to drive us to the next gas station on A-8.

We (Boy/Girl) we didn't ask around the Restaurant just at the gas station and the fifth person was willing to take us to Bilbao !! Really good spot even for going to france or so - yes people have full cars but you just have to wait and be patient and maybe a sign isn't smart at this station :) 🌱

Took the bus out here from Bilbao. Here is where you can get a ride to Donostia.

Took the small road. The highway was impossible. To properly get from Bilbao to Donostia you wanna start even further outside the city.

Didnt work for me to get out of the city especially towards Donostia.

Didnt work for me at all. Took a train to Basauri. You might think this is a popular on-ramp but I guess there is just too much variation in where the cars are going so getting from there to Donostia was not posssible for me.

People here were a little hostile to hitchhiking thinking it was illegal. A family with kids told me they had no space in their car although there clearly was.

Almost impossible, I wasn't able to find a car there, look best at the other entrance of the city.

Better than San Mames, the other entrance of Bilbao, but complicated though.
