Direction Lausanne. The spot is a bit sketchy since cars are moving fast with little space to pull over. Best to stand in the black triangle in front of the turn and hop cars pull up on-to it.

Great spot for the highway, plenty of space for cars to move over.

Most cars going Fribourg direction, found it very diffucult to get a ride further south-east than Vevey, but might have been unlucky.

Not a good spot, the cars can't correctly stop.
But we don't wait a lot of time

At his suggestion, my previous driver dropped me off here. My destination was Lyon, but I had to signs: Lyon and Geneva. Got a ride in about 10 minutes - the wait was probably longer than it should have been, but the drivers had seen me digging in the dumpster for chocolate! They threw away 60 or 70 euros worth of amazing food in the dumpster, so I would suggest geting some 'expired' chocolate to give your driver... just wash the outside wrapper :)

Meilleur endroit pour quitter Montreux. Possibilité de prendre un train ou un bus pour atteindre ce point. Avec un panneau (Martigny, Sion...), facile de décoller en direction du Valais.
Best spot to leave Montreux. Possibly take a bus a train to get there. With a sign, pretty easy to get to Valais/Wallis.

Bonne aire d'autoroute, pour quitter le Valais ou y entrer.
Good service area to enter or to leave Valais.

Sur le parking, demandez à aller vers Lausanne, Genève ou Berne (utilisez les plaques d'immatriculation). Vous éviterez ainsi l'agglomération de Lausanne si vous allez plus loin.
In the parking area, ask to get to Lausanne, Geneva or Bern (use the cars' licence plates), so you can avoid Lausanne's center if you're going further.

the villeneuve MC DONALDS restaurant: i have not hitchhiked from here but believe it can be a good relais on the way from (and to) the 'mont blanc' meaning martigny/aigle on autoroute (A 9/E62) and the cities of lausanne and geneve (via A9 and later A1) or fribourg/bern (via A9 and later A12). there is a commercial zone ("riviera") with a huge COOP supermarket as well nearby.

CORRRECTION to my previous post: the suburban train stop from which you can reach this place easiest is called 'bossière/lutry', the suburban trains that take you there are number '2' and '4' (NOT number '21' which is not stopping there).

the SHELL & AUTOGRILL petrolstation on A9/E62 close to lausanne, a very good place to reach either fribourg/bern/basel or zurich (via A12/E27) or montreux, martigny and the mont blanc (via the A9 autoroute). you can reach this relais from the main train station of lausanne in 15 minutes: take the suburban train (S21) to "bossieres" (three stops), walk up the roads to the autoroute, climb over the fence and, there you are. there is, as mentioned, a small shop inside the petrolstation and an AUTOGRILL self service restaurant. from the terrace of the selfservice (when the view is clear) you can see the ice and snow capped top of 'mont blanc' mountain. on my personal rating (1 = poor, 10 = superb) i will give this spot a "9 to 10", it only takes minutes to find a car taking you somewhere, the station is very clean and safe, there is plenty-plenty of traffic, the view is spectacular. a foot bridge links the (southern eastbound) station with the (northern westbound) station where cars are heading in the geneva direction.

People do stop here because of the magnificent view. Probably only good in nice weather.

This one is great for going to Lausanne/Genève, not so good, for direction Bern. Waited 45 mins to get a car to Bern

Got a ride to Lausanne within 2 minutes, at night! Just stand by the pedestrian crossing where the pavement ends and hard shoulder begins.

Maybe not the best spot if you're headed to Bern. Got dropped off here in the evening on a Saturday. Waited 40 mins with a sign till it got too dark and gave up. The rain probably didn't help.
