easy to get a lift to a service station on the A1 or M1, used it a couple times now, and the workers don't kick you out―Anonymous

If you're going South, standing near the petrol station here works quite well. However, there are some handy places to stand near bus stops and the like where cars can pull in further into the city, near the racecourse, and if you stand there instead you'll usually get a lift out of town in less time than it would take you to walk to the outskirts.―Jaberwocky

Quite some bus stops and such closer to York but people don't seem to go towards the A64 much and there's nowhere to pull over near the A64―Atopia

I used the layby/bus stop up the road, waiting for about 30 - 45 mins, i would say the layby is better than garage.―Beeg

I stand either outside of the petrol station (the one with the Daleks on it), or just near the bus stop slightly further along the road when heading East. Usually get a lift within ten minutes.―Anonymous

This is where I wait if I'm heading south. There's a parking bay alongside the road and it's fairly easy to meet people heading toward the M1 from here. You can either walk from town - it's about 5 miles from the centre - or get a Coastliner bus to Askham Bryan College, which is about £1.20.―Anonymous

This is my preferred spot for leaving York to go South. Standing 30 metres or so in front of one of the bus stops here works, and―Anonymous

Used this spot when I was leaving York to go to Newcastle via A1(M). There was construction going on just before this spot, so cars weren't going so fast. They can pull into the side road, as it (probably) isn't frequently used.I waited 5 minutes for a ride to Scotch Corner (A1/A66 junction) on a Friday around noon.

English people seem to be really afraid of hitchhikers, however it's a good spot to go and speak with drivers. Got a lift after 2h11min―Anonymous

I waited just up the road by the bus stop (number 6 if you are moving through York like I was)―ReubsDoos

beware of taking this road at night, the traffic is extremely sparse and while I got picked up in not too long I ended up stuck for 3 hours in the middle of the night halfway to yorkinstead to get into york get someone going north to drop you off at junction 47 then go from there
