easy to get a lift to a service station on the A1 or M1, used it a couple times now, and the workers don't kick you out―Anonymous

Everyone I spoke to was going North so it was really tricky. I waited by the exit but it wasn’t busy enough for the cars to be stopped so no one pulled over. Tried the same at the exit of the car park with no luck. I approached people at the benches by the food hall and most were going North, or there was one just not interested in giving a lift! Of those who were going North they were very lovely and wished me the best of luck getting to my destination and said they would have been happy to help if I was going the opposite way. My final destination was Peterborough. Finally I met a lovely woman and her two children who offered me a lift to Sheffield and I ended my hitching from there and got a train. Not sure what I could have done differently here. It seemed like an unlucky day.―Anonymous

(28F) Super easy. Waited by the station exit and spoke to people as they stopped to exit. Ended up getting a lift with a delivery driver that does long distance deliveries.―Anonymous

If you're going South, standing near the petrol station here works quite well. However, there are some handy places to stand near bus stops and the like where cars can pull in further into the city, near the racecourse, and if you stand there instead you'll usually get a lift out of town in less time than it would take you to walk to the outskirts.―Jaberwocky

Quite some bus stops and such closer to York but people don't seem to go towards the A64 much and there's nowhere to pull over near the A64―Atopia

I used the layby/bus stop up the road, waiting for about 30 - 45 mins, i would say the layby is better than garage.―Beeg

Got a lift here direct to Heathrow (London) in 5 minutes by a woman who wouldn't normally pick up hitch hikers. If there are lots of cars then there is a traffic jam and lots of time for people to think about taking you.―Anonymous

I stand either outside of the petrol station (the one with the Daleks on it), or just near the bus stop slightly further along the road when heading East. Usually get a lift within ten minutes.―Anonymous

Not a very easy place to get a lift at all. Two of us waited 2 hours, gave up and tried the side road... eventually opted for a taxi to Wetherby Services, which is the only time i've ever got a taxi while hitching!―Anonymous
