Ask people stopped at the traffic lights. We got a ride heading south in 30 seconds from the 3rd car stopped at the lights―Falc

If you want a spot walkingdistance from city centre to go north. Took 5 minutes before a car gave me a lift, across the bridge.―Anonymous

I haven't used to place, but am a local and I'm sure it would work well.―Anonymous

This is a motorway on ramp - best place for leaving the city canter. I've used a few times, 5-15 mins max wait time.―Anonymous

Traffic lights and plenty of traffic. Some room to stop but not perfect. A lot of traffic is going South. It may be helpful sign saying "Bombay gas station"―Anonymous

small on-ramp with little parking bay. Fairly good spot given the proximity of the carpark. Good for heading north!―Anonymous

I wouldn't say it's the best spot (not so much room to stop), but if you're heading west (Piha in my case) I'd give it a try. It took me less than 10 minutes to get a lift.―Anonymous

Right at Greenlane Train station and the Ellerslie Sunday Car Market. Easy to stop at side street, and at a traffic light.―Anonymous

Not the best - Lots of traffic but waited for over an hour to get to Warkworth, very little space to park.―Anonymous

Nice wide shoulder, near a roundabout so the cars are going slow. Hitch from underneath the 100km speed sign. 6.5/10 visibility though, because drivers are just coming out of a turn. Still works great. Hard to reach though, requires some walking.―thefallingleaf

I stood at the split between the exit and the motorway on the concrete section, trying to head north. There is a fairly wide shoulder for cars to pull over. Cars were going fast. Although the police saw me, they didn’t do anything, even though it's still a motorway with "no pedestrian" signs. I can't really recommend, but the place "works".―Bursztyn

Had to position myself well on the side of the road, but it's a busy place. Lots of cars and anyone going left is heading north. One of the better spots in Auckland for sure―Anonymous
