(on the Dover -> Calais ferry) we paid £30 and joined the ferry as foot passengers. there were lots of people driving off the ferry. we were 3 people and did not find a lift for all of us, but split into 2 and 1, and both groups found lifts to London. we asked almost everyone on the ferry and found 2-3 offers.

we were heading to Dover. it took a while to get a lift, but we were 3 people. our friends arrived to hitch after us and took a lift before us (cheeky). eventually found a lift to Maidstone after trying several spots (food court, fuel station, roundabout). Lots of French/German/Belgian/etc cars around.

Had been waiting outside petrol station for a couple hours before we realised that 90% of the traffic was entering not leaving the services. Switched spots and got offered a few lifts until eventually we got one into london within half an hour

Have done thid spot a couple times and with a 'Cambridge' sign we(Male & Female) seem to get lifts faster than it took to make the sign

West Thurrock service area. Good to get lifts to Europe! Have done it several times in 2006. £5 from central London to get there. Any questions: freddy_e@gmx.de

REDBRIDGE ROUNDABOUT A12 towards Chelmsford, Colchester and Ipswich. Big parking space, with lots of traffic going by. Might take a few rides to get out of London from here, but a great starting point and it's easily accessible by tube (Redbridge station).

I was heading to North trying to get to the M6, Didn't go so well, The cars at the mall seemed to be all locals, and truckers couldn't take me due to insurance bla bla. At around 20:00 a Services dude chatted with me, Told me to ask the truckers only and wait at the exit of the Truck Petrol station in between. He then helped me out to find a Lorry heading north, In about 45min "we" found a ride to Bermingham

Most of the traffic here was lorries that weren't allowed to take hitchers (maybe insurance policies have changed since 2006?). Took two hours to get a ride to Maidstone.

Not the best pull off spot for cars, often travelling at speed and seeing you late as they tun off the roundabout. Saying that someone stopped for me within 20 mins.

Recommend holding an 'M11' sign.

You're not allowed to hitch on motorways (M), but I was let out on the merging section here. Got picked up by a truck driver who didn't want me to get into trouble with police. So not recommended at all.

Thurrock services: Me and a friend spent around 4 hours over two days before we got a lift. Although, we did have people pulling up but unforunately they were going in a different direction to where we wanted to go (south eastwards) (April 2015).

Me and a friend thumbed outside of Wickes and after about 15 mins, a taxi driver on his way to London picked us up. We also had a guy in town who gave us a lift after we asked him for directions (April 2015).
