I spent quite a lot of time asking around for a car heading east towards Newcastle, but did not find any. Then I rearranged my destination for Manchester and found a ride pretty fast.

I stood by the traffic lights with a sign saying M74 south. It worked like a charm and almost immediately good a ride near Carlisle. The traffic lights stop for some time and especially during morning, there is quite a cue of cars.

Slip road onto M6- also a good place to get rides south. Even though it's north of Carlisle, there's still a lot of traffic. And a wide shoulder for people to pull off.
