Not a great spot, but there's nothing better nearby. I was standing in front of the traffic lights. It's tricky to get a ride because the light stays red for only about 30 seconds. Usually, you have even less time, and all the communication and getting your stuff into the car needs to happen within that short window, so be prepared to move quickly.About a 10-minute drive north, there's an excellent parking area/gas station where it's easy to get a ride in almost any direction, so just try to get there.

I stood by the traffic lights with a sign saying M74 south. It worked like a charm and almost immediately good a ride near Carlisle. The traffic lights stop for some time and especially during morning, there is quite a cue of cars.―martih

Slip road onto M6- also a good place to get rides south. Even though it's north of Carlisle, there's still a lot of traffic. And a wide shoulder for people to pull off.―Anonymous
