flight landed, rushed outside to beat fellow passengers on plane just in case any of them could pick me up, get to loading zone sidewalk n stick thumb out, timer doesn't even hit a minute until this guy pulls up and asks where I'm headed―vegains

Getting out of Arcata shouldn't take you long. Was only about 15 minutes on this corner before an old hippie picked me up... only got to Eureka though. Might want to have a sign.―Anonymous

Might be decent southbound, but very little northbound traffic here. After about an hour finally got a ride 15 miles to beyond the end of the freeway, the best one can hope for from here.―Anonymous

Evidently a popular spot (signs strewn around, other hitchers joined us while we waited) but traffic was almost entirely local, to McKinleyville etc. Eventually took a ride to Trinidad.―Anonymous

Got stock for a day. Little north traffic and people know it is a bad HH town.―Anonymous

Arcata's a cool town and all, but you can't hitch north out of it. We tried for nearly 6 hours, and a few people stopped and told us it was a tough hitch, but nobody picked us up. (we had a sign for Crescent City) You're better off on the side of the 5, even though cars are going really fast there. People are nice, but nobody's going anywhere.―Cmcneil

If you'reheading east, go for any ride going to Blue Lake or Willow Creek -- both have better 299 hitch spots and will get you outof the local traffic zone―Anonymous

Great, safe place to sleep. On the north end of the field is an out door sink and an outhouse. Big bushes for privacy and hippies everywhere.―Anonymous
